After a year and a half of virtual learning, Nate will be heading back to school this fall. Our goal in the mornings is to get dressed and out the door on time. So today we’re talking 5 tips to a killer wardrobe for school aged kids. The idea is that to make it as easy as possible for the child to get themselves ready in a timely manner. We want them to feel confident and fashionable at the same time. A confident kid makes a huge difference in the type of school year they will have.
Today’s trends are understated, minimal designs and more classic silhouettes and it makes for the perfect go-to classroom look. Clothes should never be complicated especially on children. It is their style that expresses their personalities so always listen to what they like.
An important factor for me is comfort. I look for clothes that are trendy yet comfortable so that when Nate is moving between classes or recess time, I know that he’s not restricted with his clothes. We live in Canada so considering all the different seasons we go through, I look for staple pieces that can be worn all year.
KNOW WHAT THEY HAVE IN THEIR CLOSET– Knowing what you currently have will go a long way. You won’t be buying things that they already have and just might’ve been tucked away somewhere in their closet. For me, each season I do a purge in his closet. We get rid of all the items that he’s outgrown or worn out. I have to admit that we go through PJ’s like crazy in regards to sizing. Boy, it seems like this boy keeps growing out of them or that they’re making them too small. Anyways, if they don’t wear something, please don’t keep it. You will be surprised of how much stuff you will be clearing out and it feels so good. Keep it simple for the kids in a way that makes it easy for them in the mornings.
USE A CHECKLIST OF WHAT IS NEEDED – Alright, so once you’ve gone through the child’s closet, you will now have an idea of what is needed. Is it jeans? tees? underwear. Keep a list of everything that you need to buy. This will ensure that you got everything covered.
LAYERING YOUR PIECES- I love to layer pieces for my son for many reasons. It keeps him looking stylish but at the same time uses the different pieces in a more efficient way. We have about a month and a half before the hot summer heat will quickly turn to a cool fall breeze. So when shopping for back to school outfits, we take this into consideration. This is one reason why layering clothes is so important.
DON’T FORGET YOUR NEUTRALS- Having a good selection of neutrals is key when selecting a mix and match wardrobe for back to school. I personally like some of the darker neutrals such as the greys and blacks for my son’s go to. The main reason is that little boys loves to get dirty. Hehe. The darker pieces hides the dirt whereas the lighter colors will tend to stain easily.
ADD ACCENT COLORS– Just have fun with this one. Let your kid’s personality shine through. It might not be your choice but pair the choice with a lot of the neutrals that you picked out in the previous step. So if your little one choose a neon green t-shirt, guess what, if you pair it with a cool dark grey or even black sweatpants, it wouldn’t be so bad at all.
Hope these tips help in getting the kids back to school for the new school year and don’t forget to have a blast.
