Road trip season is upon us. We are so excited and it is one of our favorite things to do in the summer. While we all dread the inevitable “Are we there yet?” from the back seat, consider these tips for road trips with kids to keep everyone (including you) happy.Every year the kids look forward to it and honestly it takes little to no effort to have a successful trip if you plan it before heading out.

9 Best Road Trip Tips For Travel With Kids

BRING SURPRISES  I like to bring little surprises to get them excited and keep them intrigue. These surprises can be anything from little Dollar Store trinkets to fun little toys picked up at gas stations or gift shops along the way. Some trips I’ve gone all out and wrapped the surprises individually so it was like unwrapping a present every hour along the way.  This REALLY helped keep the kids from asking “Are we there yet” every 5 minutes instead, they were looking forward to their next surprise gift.

HEALTHY FOOD AND TREATS – While it may seem like buying food is the easier thing to do, skip the drive-thru restaurants and go for healthier homemade food for this road trip tip. Junk food will only end up making the little ones super hyper or even have an upset stomach and we don’t want that. My kiddos loves apples slices, Ritz cheese crackers, carrots and ranch dip. We would usually make mini sliders and everyone can enjoy it along the way. Don’t forget to keep their water bottles nearby instead of juices and/or soda. You can even pack a cooler with freezies or their favorite foods.

DRIVE AT NIGHT OR EARLY IN THE MORNING This is definitely the way to go, especially if your kids are younger. We do this all the time with our kids and it makes for a more peaceful experience. Sleepy kids in their pyjamas means that hubby and I can have uninterrupted conversations.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES- I usually make a trip to the dollar store for activity books and games. They would all go in a separate bag and every time we make a stop, they kids would pick out a new activity to do. My little one loves Play Doh so that is something that is a must whereas my older son is into drawing so the apps on his Ipad is what he uses the most. Craft supplies are super easy to pack and can keep kids occupied for hours. See below for some of our favorite recommendations.

TAKE CARE OF THE DRIVER- While we all put emphasis on keeping the kids busy and taken care of and don’t get me wrong, it is really important but a safe driver is also essential.

COMFORTABLE CLOTHES AND SHOES-  This is a must folks. You do not want to have the kids wear clothing that feels restricted in any way. Loose shorts and tees are the best with comfy pair or shoes such as crocs. (That’s all my kids wear in the car)

BE PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES- This should be something you always have room for in your plan because 99% of the time, something will come up so be prepared. Always have a plan B.

PLAN AND MAP OUT BREAKS- Before you head out, plan and make notes of stops that you will be making because believe me, 25 min into your trip, someone will have to use the restroom. Also, get comfy with nature pees for any emergency.

RELAX AND HAVE A GREAT TRIP WITH YOUR FAMILY – The most important thing to remember is why you are taking a road trip and the purpose. Whether you are driving through the city or county, take in the beauty that our amazing country has to offer and enjoy the time being spent with your family. The kids will cherish and remember those road trips for years to come.
